JESUS, the head of the church

A long while before the virgin birth of Jesus Christ it was prophesized that He would be the head: (Psa 118:22) "The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner." On one occasion Jesus even reminded some of this scripture: (Mat 21:42) “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?" How important to us is the fact that Jesus became “the head stone of the corner? The chief stone in the corner is called the head of the corner: which bears up the couplings or joints of the whole building. Since Jesus is the “chief stone” and since according to inspired words the “chief stone” is called “the head” that means that Jesus is the head of the church. This also indicates to me that it is indeed Jesus who holds the building [I.e. the church] together.

Have you ever wondered whose idea it was that Jesus would become the head of the church? I don’t believe that we can say that it was Jesus’ idea to become the “head of the church”. As a matter of fact it was God the Father’s doing: (Eph 1:20-22) "Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, {21} Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: {22} And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church," Verse 20 names Jesus so there can be no mistake of whom this passage is making reference to. God has even confirmed this to us by raising Christ from the dead. And verse 22 informs us that God has “put all things under His feet” and appointed Christ to “be the head over all things to the church”.

It would be a ridiculous thing if the head were not connected to the body. Can you imagine how ridiculous it would be if the head and the body were not connected. Friends, we [the body i.e. the church] need the head. The head is needed to keep things in order. The head is needed to give instructions to the body. It was due to God’s good will and pleasure that He gave us a head that we might be joined to His Son; our head.

The apostle Paul uses the relationship of a husband and wife to prove that Jesus Christ is the head of the church: (Eph 5:22-23) “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. {23} For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body." This is the work of God as God has made the man head of the woman in marriage, even as Christ is the head of the church. Another point that can be made here is that as the wife looks to the husband for security even so should the church look to Christ, the head of the church, for security.

Without Jesus Christ as “the head of the church” we would not be complete: (Col 2:10) "And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:" Outside of the body of Christ we are imperfect. But in Christ we become “complete”. This is something that the old Law could never do: (Heb 10:1)  "For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect."

It is through the headship of Jesus Christ that we are “knitted” or bonded together: (Col 2:19) "And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God." Without a head to direct our paths we would be going in all directions! Stop and think about this for a moment. Do you suppose that this could be the cause of so much division in the religious world today? If everyone would truly accept Jesus as “head” over all things to the Church of Christ where would the divisions be? God has made Jesus the head of the church and we have no choice but to honor and accept Jesus and His teachings to lead and direct us.
